For them this is a form of entertainment and at times an outlet for malice, yet this can very adversely affect lives and have serious consequences.
Though there are guidelines for conduct, yet often they are not adhered with and undesirable language is used and highly personal things are discussed. This can cause acute stress for the victim and many times upon reading this one is traumatized and can even go into severe depression.

Social media is also often used as a means for maligning the reputation of business houses like restaurants, hospitals, salons, shops etc. Providing honest feedback and making a legitimate complaint is something positive but often exaggerated complaints are mentioned with the sole purpose of adversely affecting the business house and jeopardizing their reputation. At times commenting negatively is also used as a form of blackmail by customers in order to pressurize business houses to comply with their unreasonable requests.
People using social media have a moral and social responsibility, which is more than merely feeling invincible while sitting on the key board, airing views, commenting on people with complete indifference to consequences and overall using it as an effective tool for self- projection.
The ideal use of social media is sending across positive messages, sharing authentic information, responding to people’s request for advice and offering assistance whenever possible. Social media’s many strengths can only be advantageous if there is a clear discrimination between authentic news and conjecture. The desire for self- projection should not be the major driving force and an enormous number of likes not the ultimate goal.
